IELTS for UKVI: the practice is identical, the booking is not

IELTS for UKVI has the same questions, format and marking as standard IELTS — so there is no such thing as UKVI-specific practice material. What differs is the booking, and booking the wrong one is what costs people a fee and six weeks.
Nearly every guide to IELTS for UKVI tells you that the test content is identical to standard IELTS — and then stops, without saying what follows from that. Here is what follows, because it is the practically useful half:
There is no such thing as UKVI-specific practice material. Same questions, same format, same band descriptors, same marking. Any IELTS practice is UKVI practice. If a platform is selling you "UKVI practice tests" as a distinct product, it is selling you IELTS practice with a different label on it.
What is different is the booking. And booking the wrong thing is where UKVI candidates actually lose money — not on preparation.
For the requirements themselves, the authority is GOV.UK and the Home Office. They change, and a blog post — this one included — is not where you should confirm the score you need.
What actually differs
IELTS for UKVI is a SELT: a Secure English Language Test, approved by the Home Office for visa purposes. The differences are administrative:
- Approved centres only. Not every IELTS centre is UKVI-approved. This is the most common booking error.
- Stricter identity checks at the centre.
- A different Test Report Form, carrying a UKVI number. This is what the Home Office accepts. A standard IELTS TRF does not carry it.
The questions, the timings, the four sections and the 0–9 band scale are the same. A band 6.5 on UKVI is the same performance as a band 6.5 on standard IELTS.
The three bookings that cost people money
1. Booking standard IELTS when the route needs UKVI. The result is a perfectly valid IELTS score that your visa application cannot use. You pay again and wait again. This is the expensive one, and it happens because the two look nearly identical at the point of booking.
2. Booking Academic when you needed General Training, or the reverse. Both exist in UKVI form. Which you need depends on your route, not on preference.
3. Booking a four-skill test when the route needs IELTS Life Skills — or the reverse. This is the one most people have never heard of, and it is covered next.
IELTS Life Skills is a different test, not a different level
This catches people out, so it is worth being precise.

Life Skills has no reading or writing at all, and it does not give you a band score. If your route needs Life Skills B1 and you sit IELTS for UKVI General Training, you have bought the wrong test — and vice versa. You book a specific level of Life Skills, so knowing whether your route needs A1, A2 or B1 matters before you pay.
Which test for which route
Broadly, and subject to the Home Office's current rules:

At the time of writing, GOV.UK maps B1 to 4.0 in each skill and B2 to 5.5 in each skill on the banded UKVI tests. Two things to note about that: the requirement is per skill, not an average — a 6.5 overall with a 5.0 in writing does not meet a B2 requirement — and your university or sponsor may demand more than the visa minimum. Confirm both, on GOV.UK and with your institution, before you book.
So how should you prepare?
Exactly as you would for standard IELTS, because it is standard IELTS. Which means the real question is the ordinary one: which of your four skills is lowest under exam timing? Since UKVI requirements are per skill, your weakest section is not just a drag on your average — it can be the single thing that fails the application.

What is the difference between IELTS and IELTS for UKVI?
The test itself is the same — same questions, format, timings, marking and 0–9 band scale. IELTS for UKVI is administered at Home Office-approved centres under stricter identity checks, and produces a Test Report Form carrying a UKVI number. That form is what a visa application needs; a standard IELTS TRF does not carry it.
Do I need special UKVI practice material?
No. Because the content is identical, any IELTS practice is UKVI practice. There is no separate UKVI syllabus, question type or marking scheme to prepare for.
Can I use a standard IELTS result for my visa?
Generally no, if your route requires a SELT. The result may be perfectly valid academically while being unusable for the application, because it lacks the UKVI reference. Check your route's requirement before booking rather than after.
Is IELTS Life Skills easier than IELTS for UKVI?
It is not a lower version of the same test — it is a different test. Life Skills assesses only speaking and listening and is marked pass or fail, with no reading or writing and no band score. It is easier in the sense that it covers less, but only certain routes accept it, and sitting it when your route needs a four-skill band score is a wasted fee.
Is IELTS for UKVI available on computer?
Computer-delivered UKVI tests are offered at many approved centres, though availability varies by location and by which test you need. Check what your nearest approved centre actually offers when you book.
How long is an IELTS for UKVI result valid?
Two years from the test date for most purposes, but the relevant validity is whatever the Home Office specifies for your route at the time you apply. Plan the test date against your application window.
