PTE Core CLB calculator

Move the sliders to see your CLB per skill and whether you clear Express Entry. The one thing to know before you start: IRCC takes the lowest of your four CLB results, not the average. One weak skill caps the entire profile.

Scored per skill on that skill's own CLB, no spouse. Your overall CLB decides eligibility; these four decide points.

Speaking is capping you. Another 3 points there takes you to CLB 7 and adds 8 CRS points — every other skill is already ahead.

Note how uneven the columns are: CLB 9 needs Reading 78 but Writing 88. Writing is the usual bottleneck, and averaging your scores hides it completely.

Why one skill decides everything

Candidates average their scores in their head, see a healthy number, and build a profile around it. IRCC does not average. If your Writing lands at CLB 6 while everything else is CLB 9, you are a CLB 6 candidate — and the CRS points you were counting on are not there.

That is why the calculator names your bottleneck and tells you how many points fix it. Chasing an overall improvement is wasted effort when one skill is holding the gate.

What a higher CLB is actually worth

Language is the fastest CRS factor to move. You cannot quickly add a degree or three years of work experience — you can raise a writing score in weeks.

Moving from CLB 7 to CLB 9 is 56 points on its own, and skill transferability can add up to 50 more when language is paired with your education or work experience. With recent draws well above 500, that is frequently the gap between an invitation and another six months.

Figures are the no-spouse grid. With a spouse or common-law partner the language points are slightly lower (CLB 9 is 29 per skill).

Questions

Does IRCC average my four CLB scores?

No, and this is the single most expensive misunderstanding in Express Entry. IRCC takes the LOWEST of your four CLB results as your overall CLB. A profile with CLB 9 in three skills and CLB 6 in the fourth is a CLB 6 profile. Your weakest skill is your score.

Is it PTE Core or PTE Academic for Canada PR?

PTE Core. IRCC accepts PTE Core for economic immigration; PTE Academic is for study permits and for Australia. Booking the wrong one is the most costly mistake in PTE, because the result cannot be used for the application you booked it for and there are no refunds.

What PTE Core score do I need for CLB 9?

Listening 82, Reading 78, Speaking 84 and Writing 88. Notice how uneven that is — Writing is ten points harder than Reading. Writing is the usual bottleneck, and because IRCC takes your minimum, that one number often decides your whole profile.

What is the minimum for Express Entry?

CLB 7 in all four skills for Federal Skilled Worker and for Canadian Experience Class at NOC TEER 0 or 1. That is PTE Core Listening 60, Reading 60, Speaking 68 and Writing 69. CLB 5 covers CEC at TEER 2/3 and Federal Skilled Trades.

How long are the scores valid?

Language results must be less than two years old on the date you apply. PTE Core results usually arrive within 2 to 5 working days, so the test itself is rarely the bottleneck — the two-year clock is. Plan your test date against your application window, not the other way round.

How many CRS points is language actually worth?

For a candidate without a spouse, CLB 9 or above earns 31 points per ability — 124 across the four. CLB 7 earns 17 per ability, or 68. That is a 56-point swing before skill transferability, which can add up to 50 more when your language is paired with education or work experience. When recent draws sit well above 500, that combination is often the difference between an invitation and another six months of waiting.

Is CLB 7 enough?

Enough to be eligible, rarely enough to be invited. CLB 7 meets the Federal Skilled Worker minimum, but it earns 68 language points against 124 at CLB 9. Most competitive profiles target CLB 9, and language is usually the fastest factor to move — you cannot quickly gain a degree or three years of experience, but you can raise a writing score.

Which skill should I work on first?

The one holding your overall CLB down, and it is usually Writing. Look at the minimums: CLB 9 needs Reading 78 but Writing 88 — ten points harder for the same benchmark. Because IRCC takes your lowest, a strong Reading score cannot compensate. The calculator above names your bottleneck and the exact points needed.

Does PTE Core count for category-based draws?

Yes. Category-based draws in 2026 cover healthcare, STEM, trades, transport and French speakers, and they use the same CRS score and the same language requirements. A higher CLB helps in every category draw, and the French categories reward French results separately.

Thresholds follow Pearson's published PTE Core to CLB concordance. Immigration rules change — confirm against IRCC before you file. Results must be under two years old on the application date.
